To turn off BootP and ping the device, your laptop will need a route to that subnet. Once you get the IP-less device's DHCP requests getting forwarded over so BootP can see them, you should be able to set the IP no problem. By default, a managed switch won't be forwarding this to other subnets from the subnet the switch lives on, but you CAN set them up to do it. Your switch/route gear would need to be setup to forward the DHCP requests to wherever BootP is. If the request is accepted, recovery key will be sent to you.BootP works on MAC and the request packets from the devices until the device has an IP already.
